Architectural Sculpture and Video Installation, 2016
Palazzo Mora, La Biennale di Venezia
A collaboration between Lightroom Studio / William Carpenter and Bojana Ginn
Drawing Machine is a collaborative sculptural video installation merging the architectural structure conceived by William Carpenter’s Lightroom Studio with process-based video and light projection by Bojana Ginn. Bringing together architecture, sculpture, moving image, and light, the work explores the interconnected dimensions of time, space, and existence.
Constructed from locally sourced wood, the architectural structure establishes a physical framework rooted in materiality, place, and sustainability. Within this structure, light becomes both a material and a metaphor: an element that transforms the perception of space while evoking associations with knowledge, consciousness, imagination, and the immaterial.
Ginn’s video projection reveals the process of creation through the lens of contemporary technologies. Using digital tools and computational processes as a prism for light and thought, the moving image explores how ideas take form, evolve, and unfold in time. The dialogue between the physical structure and the projected image creates an environment in which the tangible and intangible, the material and the virtual, continuously inform one another.
At the intersection of architecture and new media, Drawing Machine considers drawing not merely as the representation of an idea, but as an evolving act of creation—an interplay between material, light, technology, and human imagination.
